Today has been mostly uneventful. I slept in, packed my things, ate a big breakfast, took a train to Budapest (on which I met quite the character, Chris, who started a company called “Nude Dudes Candles”), relaxed in a park, then met up with my Couchsurfing hosts for a lovely evening of chatting and getting to know each other over drinks and dancing at Szimpla Kert, a famous bar in Budapest (which was super fun). So instead of a regular blog post, today I thought I’d do something a little fun and share my 10 favourite travel anthems. I have an entire “Travel Anthems” playlist with over 100 songs, so this is something I’ve thought a lot about. Most of them aren’t explicitly related to travel, but in some way connect to the emotions I have when travelling (or are love songs where I pretend the love interest is travel/the city I’m in).
Music is a magical thing. It has the power to make you feel something deeper and bigger than yourself. As someone who struggles with mental illnesses, that power can be transformational. It can make you feel happy, it can help you get out a good cry when you need to, it can connect you with memories or dreams or hopes, it can ground you in the present. It’s potential is unlimited. I think travel is the same way. Combining those two things – whether I’m listening to music as I’m wandering through a new city or on a long train ride or relaxing in my hostel after a tiring day – is as close to perfection as I can imagine. Plus, when you're travelling solo, music is pretty necessary in my book so creating that perfect playlist is a must.
So without further ado, here are my top 10 favourite travel anthems (in no particular order).
1 ) Brand New – Ben Rector
2) Float On – Modest Mouse
3) Dream Big – Ryan Shupe & The Rubberband
4) I Lived – OneRepublic
5) Odds Are – Barenaked Ladies
6) Great Escape – Sister Hazel
7) Start Right Now – Young Pines
8) Verge – Owl City
9) Smile & Keep Your Head Up – Us The Duo
10) Take the World by Storm – Lukas Graham
If you have a favourite travel anthem, share it in the comments!
